![]() ![]() Ditto with being a white-passing Asian! Or Los Angeles cafés! I feel like the best part of our friendship is ahead of us. I want to talk about flannels and MTV Unplugged and Fresh Prince with you so badly. Even crazier, we haven’t had our first Gen X conversation yet in person. You’re literally one of the main reasons I haven’t dipped from Twitter yet. As the years progressed, I realized how much I needed you as a friend and fellow writer. I was kinda unknown at the time besides having published in a couple of legit literary journal publications. I honestly felt like I’d made it to the next level as an emerging writer. And yet, I remember the day you followed me back. Jackson Bliss I feel like we’ve been friends on Twitter forever. You are someone in the literary world that I feel like I have known for ages, who I can easily chat with about race, class, art, writing, Gen X, LA, whatever. Porochista Khakpour I was trying to remember when we first encountered each other. This interview was a lovely opportunity to catch up, reflect on process, look back and forward, and share notes on what it means to make work that is highly particular. This is a kaleidoscopic, lyrical memoir that gives a Choose Your Own Adventure (CYOA) treatment to multicultural identity. We’ve also been admirers of each other’s work as fellow Gen Xers who like weird stuff that also happens to have a conscience! This year, Bliss asked me to blurb Dream Pop Origami(Unsolicited Press, 2022), and it was an absolute joy to read. It happens to be who we are! It’s unsurprising we’ve been a support group of two, on multiple occasions navigating recurring online bigotry oriented towards marginalized identities. And our art similarly tends to eschew margins and defy expectation. Neither of us fit neatly into the categories of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, or class. ![]() ![]() That explains how Jackson Bliss and I entered each other’s orbits a decade or so ago. You find your people based on how you fit into this world but other times it’s how you don’t. ![]()
